Southwest Michigan Horticultural Days set for Feb. 5-6, 2020

Attend educational sessions on grapes, blueberries, tree fruits, vegetables and, new to 2020, hemp.

The 2020 Southwest Michigan Horticultural Days will be Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 5-6 at Lake Michigan College’s Mendel Center in Benton Harbor, Michigan, hosted by the Michigan Grape Society, Michigan State University Extension and Lake Michigan College Wine and Viticulture Technology. There will be a trade show located in the Grand Upton Hall.

MSU Extension educators, commercial growers and outside experts will provide informative talks and answer questions in educational sessions. RUP credits will be included for many of the sessions.

The Wednesday afternoon vegetable production session will include information on invasive plant identification and control, invasive insects, cover crops and soil health, sweet corn pest identification and a pollinator update.

Tree fruit sessions on both days will include talks on fire blight, trends in the tree fruit nursery industry, pollination, ground covers and tree fruit insects.

A wine grape session on Wednesday afternoon and two grape sessions on Thursday will cover a wide range of topics relevant to commercial growers.

Blueberry educational sessions will also be offered on Thursday morning and afternoon.

New in 2020 will be a hemp education session on Thursday morning.

Registration and the trade show begin at 8 a.m. and the educational sessions start at 9 a.m. both days. Educational sessions end at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and 3 p.m. on Thursday. A wine showcase free for all registrants will be held Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Drawing for door prizes will be held both days.

Lunch both days is included in the registration fee. Registrations postmarked after Monday, Jan. 13, 2020 are $65 per person.
