Plan to attend the Michiana Irrigated Corn and Soybean Production Program
Educational program to address issues related to irrigated corn and soybean production will be held Feb. 24, 2020, in Shipshewana, Indiana.
Agricultural producers from Indiana and Michigan are interested in fine-tuning their irrigated corn and soybean production systems. Because of this, the Indiana Soybean Alliance, Indiana Corn Marketing Council, Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee, Michigan State University Extension and Purdue University Extension are cooperating to conduct an educational program to address issues related to irrigated corn and soybean production. The program will be held Monday Feb. 24, 2020, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Blue Gate Restaurant, 195 North Van Buren St., Shipshewana, IN 46565.
Presenters include Bob Nielsen, Darcy Talenko and Steve Engleking from Purdue University; Lyndon Kelley, Christy Sprague, Youngsuk Dong and Jim Hilker from Michigan State University; Todd Feenstra from Tritium Inc. and local producers.
The following topics will be covered:
- Maintaining profit while avoiding yield catastrophe in irrigated corn.
- Results and applications from the Cass County pilot project in Michigan and the LENK groundwater monitoring program in Indiana.
- Weather apps for improving your irrigated crop management.
- Soybean producer panel: Ultra-early soybean planting and lessons learned from 2019.
- Weed management considerations prior to planting seed corn.
- Irrigation management to minimize disease and maximize water use efficiency.
- Corn and soybean market outlook (short term and long term).
Indiana producers will earn Pesticide Applicator Records Program (PARP) credits and Michigan producers will earn pesticide recertification credits.
The Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee, the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Marketing Council are covering most of the costs for this program. However, there is a $20 per person registration fee and pre-registration is requested before Wednesday, Feb. 19, to ensure an accurate count for lunch and materials.
