The Michigan State University Extension Michigan Conservation Stewards Program (CSP) is an educational program for those who are enthusiastic about learning science-based ecosystem management principles and sharing this knowledge with others to help improve local communities. Through this program, participants will learn essential strategies to understand and help restore and conserve ecosystems in Michigan communities.

Instructors for CSP include Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Natural Features Inventory, and a variety of local program planners and conservation experts.

This 10-week VIRTUAL Fall 2021 Program will be held on Wednesdays, September 8 – November 10, 2021.  All classes will be held via Zoom.

There will be four local learning cohorts: Capital Area Region, Oakland County, St. Clair County and Washtenaw County. Participants chose the location closest to their home to personalize their learning experience. Local conservation partners from these areas will be giving program lectures and participants will be expected to go on three self-led field activities in these areas of Michigan. If you do not live near one of these areas and will not be able to travel to them for field activities, please sign up here to be notified for future programs. We anticipate offering CSP in 2022 in other areas of Michigan.

Enrollment for this VIRTUAL program is limited. Each cohort is limited to 30 participants/location.

2 hours of live instruction on the following topics will be delivered live each Wednesday via Zoom:

  • 6 PM – 7 PM: Foundations of Conservation in Michigan and State Level Overviews of Michigan Terrestrial, Wetland, and Aquatic Ecosystems (delivered by CSP Team)
  • 7 PM – 8 PM: Local Conservation, Restoration & Mitigation of Michigan Natural Communities (delivered by local program planners and content experts)

Additional elements of VIRTUAL CSP include:
1. Three self-guided field activities assigned and completed with guidance from local partners in the Capital Area and Oakland, St. Clair, and Washtenaw Counties, and which provide opportunities to visit many ecologically diverse locations that highlight the natural ecosystems & communities of your local area
2. Weekly online learning content completed prior to each week's live instruction
3. Capstone (Applied) Project related to restoring and conserving Michigan’s ecosystem, with guidance provided by local mentor

To receive a Certificate of Completion for the course, participants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • All course content, including live and online instruction (Note: live sessions will be recorded and available for review)
